Clayton Summary

Clayton is a small town located in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area.

History

Clayton was founded in 1837 by William Clayton, a Quaker from North Carolina. The town was originally called Claytonville, but the name was changed to Clayton in 1851. The town was incorporated in 1871.
Clayton was a farming community until the late 19th century, when the railroad came through the area. This allowed the town to become a shipping center for the surrounding farms. The town also became a popular stop for travelers on the railroad.

Geography

Clayton is located at 39°45'25"N 86°25'45"W (39.756944, -86.429167). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Clayton is largely based on agriculture and light manufacturing. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
