Bethany was founded in 1818 by a group of Quakers from North Carolina. The town was named after the biblical village of Bethany, which was the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. The town was incorporated in 1837.
In the late 19th century, Bethany was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.
