Wagoner is a city located in Wagoner County, Oklahoma. It is situated on the Arkansas River, approximately 25 miles southeast of Tulsa. The city was founded in 1849 and incorporated in 1898. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,323.
Geography
Wagoner is located at 35°58'25" North, 95°20'25" West (35.973611, -95.340278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
The economy of Wagoner is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including a Tyson Foods poultry processing plant, a ConAgra Foods plant, and a Nestle Purina PetCare plant. The city also has a large agricultural sector, with several large farms located in the area.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 8,323 people, 3,093 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,011.2 people per square mile (390.2/km2). There were 3,521 housing units at an average density of 428.7 per square mile (165.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 4.2% African American, 14.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
