Temple Summary

Temple is a small town located in Cotton County, Oklahoma. It is situated in the southwestern part of the state, about 20 miles from the Texas border. The town was founded in 1891 and was named after the nearby Temple Creek. The population of Temple was 1,093 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Temple is located at 34°45'25" North, 98°45'25" West (34.756944, -98.756944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Temple is largely based on agriculture. Cotton, wheat, and sorghum are the main crops grown in the area. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 686.2 per square mile (265.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 81.2% White, 0.2% African American, 14.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
