Tecumseh Summary
Tecumseh is a city located in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 6,457 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.3 percent from 6,049 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Shawnee Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Tecumseh was founded in 1891 by the Sac and Fox Nation, who named it after the famous Shawnee leader Tecumseh. The town was incorporated in 1898. The town was originally located in the Sac and Fox Nation, but was later annexed by the Pottawatomie County.
Tecumseh was a major stop on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway, which ran through the town from 1892 to 1932. The railroad brought many new settlers to the area, and the town grew rapidly. By the early 1900s, Tecumseh had become a thriving community with a population of over 1,000.
In the early 20th century, Tecumseh was a major center for the oil and gas industry. The town was home to several oil refineries and gas processing plants. The oil and gas industry provided jobs for many of the town's residents.
Geography
Tecumseh is located at 35°17'25" North, 96°56'45" West (35.290278, -96.945556). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Tecumseh's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several large agricultural operations, including a large poultry farm and a large dairy farm. The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large furniture manufacturer and a large plastics manufacturer.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,049 people, 2,310 households, and 1,619 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,164.2 people per square mile (450.2/km2). There were 2,521 housing units at an average density of 483.2 per square mile (186.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 0.7% African American, 11.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 2,310 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,917, and the median income for a family was $36,944. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,972 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,845.
