Stuart Summary

Stuart is a small town located in Hughes County, Oklahoma. It is situated in the south-central part of the state, approximately 80 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. The town was founded in 1891 and named after the first postmaster, William Stuart. The population of Stuart was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Stuart is located at 35°25'25" North, 96°17'45" West (35.423, -96.296). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

Economy

Stuart’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms and ranches, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a few restaurants and convenience stores.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,213.3 people per square mile (468.7/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 537.8 per square mile (207.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 81.2% White, 0.2% African American, 14.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,000, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,000. About 16.7% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.3% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
