History

The area that is now Shady Grove Cdp was originally inhabited by the Cherokee Nation. The area was part of the Cherokee Nation’s “Cooweescoowee District”, which was established in 1817. The area was part of the Cherokee Nation’s “Tahlequah District”, which was established in 1839.
In the late 1800s, the area was settled by European-American settlers. The first post office in the area was established in 1891, and the town was named “Shady Grove”. The town was officially incorporated in 1901.

Geography

Shady Grove Cdp is located at 35°51'25"N 94°51'45"W (35.856944, -94.862500). It is situated in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, and is part of the Tahlequah Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The total area of Shady Grove Cdp is 4.2 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly hilly, with some flat areas. The elevation of the town is 890 feet above sea level.
