Roland is a small town located in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma. It is situated in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, about 20 miles east of Fort Smith, Arkansas. The town was founded in 1887 and named after a local Cherokee chief, Chief Roland. The population of Roland was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Roland is located at 35°25'25" North, 94°37'17" West (35.423, -94.621). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Roland’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The town also has a small retail sector, with several stores and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 704.2 per square mile (272.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 0.7% African American, 14.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 4.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $33,750. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,945.
