Purcell Summary
Purcell is a city located in McClain County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,884 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Purcell was founded in 1887 by the Santa Fe Railroad. It was named after Edward B. Purcell, a Santa Fe official. The town was incorporated in Indian Territory in 1893.
Geography
Purcell is located at 35°01′45″N 97°23′45″W (35.029167, -97.395833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Purcell is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large employers, including Purcell Tire and Rubber Company, Purcell Public Schools, and Purcell Municipal Hospital.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 5,884 people, 2,093 households, and 1,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,133.3 people per square mile (437.7/km2). There were 2,309 housing units at an average density of 446.2 per square mile (172.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 5.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 4.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.7% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $31,912 versus $23,958 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
