History
Perkins was founded in 1891 by the Santa Fe Railroad. The town was named after a railroad official, J.C. Perkins. The post office was established in 1892.
Geography
Perkins is located at 36°25'45" North, 97°7'45" West (36.429167, -97.129028). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Perkins is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural operations, including a large hog farm and a large dairy farm. The city also has several manufacturing plants, including a plastics plant and a metal fabrication plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,340 people, 1,323 households, and 890 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 1,457 housing units at an average density of 662.2 per square mile (255.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.90% White, 0.30% African American, 5.90% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 5.12% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.48% of the population.
There were 1,323 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older.
