Pawnee Summary
Pawnee is a city located in Pawnee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,190 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.3 percent from 2,020 at the 2000 census. Pawnee is the county seat of Pawnee County.
Geography
Pawnee is located at 36°20'45" North, 96°59'45" West (36.3458, -96.9958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.
History
Pawnee was founded in 1875 by the Pawnee Indian Tribe. The town was named after the tribe, which had been relocated to the area from Nebraska in 1873. The town was incorporated in 1891.
The town was a major trading center for the surrounding area, and was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a cotton gin, and a blacksmith shop. The town also had a newspaper, the Pawnee Herald, which was published from 1891 to 1895.
In the early 1900s, Pawnee was a major stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The railroad brought in new businesses and people, and the town grew rapidly.

The economy of Pawnee is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several large farms, as well as several smaller farms. The town is also home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,020 people, 790 households, and 545 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 890 housing units at an average density of 676.2 per square mile (261.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 75.2% White, 0.7% African American, 15.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 8.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 790 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $26,944, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $26,250 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,845. About 14.2% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 14.3% of those age 65 or over.
