Nowata is a small town located in the northeastern corner of Oklahoma, in Nowata County. It is situated on the Verdigris River, and is approximately 50 miles northeast of Tulsa. Nowata is located at 36°44'25" North, 95°35'17" West (36.740278, -95.588333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km²), all of it land.

Economy

Nowata’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several large agricultural businesses, including a feed mill, a grain elevator, and a fertilizer plant. There are also several small businesses in the area, including a hardware store, a grocery store, and a restaurant.

The racial makeup of the town was 81.45% White, 0.48% African American, 13.90% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 3.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.90% of the population.
There were 1,093 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
