Midwest City Summary

Midwest City, Oklahoma is a city located in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, United States. It is part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area and is located just east of the city of Oklahoma City. The population was 54,371 at the 2010 census, making it the eighth largest city in the state.

History

Midwest City was founded in 1942 as a planned community for defense workers employed at the nearby Tinker Air Force Base. The city was named after the Midwest Air Depot, which was the original name of the base. The city was incorporated in 1943 and has grown steadily since then.

Geography

Midwest City is located at 35°27'25" North, 97°23'17" West (35.456944, -97.388056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.7 km2), of which 24.1 square miles (62.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Midwest City is home to several major employers, including Tinker Air Force Base, Boeing, and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. The city also has a strong retail sector, with several large shopping centers and numerous smaller retail outlets.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 54,371 people, 20,845 households, and 14,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,248.3 people per square mile (868.2/km2). There were 22,845 housing units at an average density of 945.2 per square mile (364.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 15.2% African American, 5.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 20,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,817, and the median income for a family was $50,817. Males had a median income of $37,817 versus $27,817 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,817. About 8.2% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
