Holdenville Summary

Holdenville is a city located in Hughes County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,771 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.3 percent from 5,338 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hughes County.

History

Holdenville was founded in 1901 by the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad. It was named for William Holden, a railroad official. The town was incorporated in Indian Territory in 1902.

Geography

Holdenville is located at 35°14′45″N 96°25′45″W (35.245833, -96.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Holdenville is the home of the Holdenville Oil and Gas Field, which is the largest oil and gas field in Oklahoma. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a furniture factory, and a plastics plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,338 people, 2,093 households, and 1,395 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,269.2 people per square mile (489.3/km2). There were 2,521 housing units at an average density of 602.2 per square mile (232.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 8.45% African American, 14.45% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 7.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,944. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $19,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,945. About 17.2% of families and 20.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
