Hobart Summary
Hobart is a city located in Kiowa County, Oklahoma. It is the county seat of Kiowa County and is located in the southwestern part of the state. The population of Hobart was 2,945 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.3 percent from 2,717 at the 2000 census.
History
Hobart was founded in 1901 by the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad. The town was named after Hobart, New York, the hometown of the railroad's president, William H. Hobart. The town was incorporated in 1902 and a post office was established in 1903.
Geography
Hobart is located at 35°1′45″N 99°7′45″W (35.029167, -99.129028). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.
Economy
Hobart's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large farms and ranches, as well as a number of small businesses. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing and service industries.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,717 people, 1,093 households, and 717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,072.2 people per square mile (800.2/km2). There were 1,223 housing units at an average density of 927.2 per square mile (357.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.45% White, 0.81% African American, 11.45% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 4.45% from other races, and 1.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.45% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,845. About 14.2% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
