Hennessey is a town located in Kingfisher County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,085 at the 2010 census, an increase of 11.3 percent from 1,876 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Kingfisher County.

History

Hennessey was founded in 1891 by the Santa Fe Railroad. The town was named after John Hennessey, a railroad official. The post office was established in 1892.

Geography

Hennessey is located at 35°59'45" North, 97°59'45" West (35.995833, -97.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Hennessey is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,876 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 830 housing units at an average density of 676.2 per square mile (262.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 92.45% White, 0.05% African American, 2.45% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 3.45% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.45% of the population.
There were 745 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town, the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
