History

Dougherty, Oklahoma is a small town located in Murray County, Oklahoma. It was founded in 1891 by a group of settlers from Arkansas. The town was named after the Dougherty family, who were among the first settlers. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon became a center for the oil and gas industry.
The town was incorporated in 1901 and the first mayor was J.W. Dougherty. The town grew rapidly in the early 1900s, and by 1910 it had a population of over 500 people. The town was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a post office.
In the 1920s, the town experienced a boom in the oil and gas industry. This led to the construction of several oil refineries and pipelines in the area. The town also became a center for the cattle industry, with several large ranches located nearby.
The Great Depression hit Dougherty hard, and the population declined significantly. However, the town was able to recover and by 1940 the population had grown to over 800 people.
