Cleveland Summary

Cleveland is a city located in Pawnee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.3 percent from 3,523 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Pawnee County.

Geography

Cleveland is located at 36°20′45″N 96°41′17″W (36.3458, -96.6881). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), all land.

History

Cleveland was founded in 1891 by the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway. It was named for President Grover Cleveland. The post office was established on April 15, 1891. The town was incorporated in Indian Territory in 1895.

Cleveland is a small rural community with a diverse economy. The city is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of agricultural operations, including cattle, poultry, and hog farms.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,523 people, 1,364 households, and 902 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,072.2 people per square mile (800.2/km2). There were 1,521 housing units at an average density of 890.2 per square mile (344.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 75.17% White, 0.17% African American, 14.90% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 9.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.20% of the population.
There were 1,364 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,845. About 14.2% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
