McIntosh County Summary
Mcintosh County is located in the southeastern corner of Oklahoma, and is bordered by Muskogee County to the north, Haskell County to the east, Pittsburg County to the south, and Okmulgee County to the west. The county seat is Eufaula, and the county is named for an early leader of the Creek Nation, Chief William McIntosh. The county has a total area of 590 square miles, and a population of 20,252 as of the 2010 census.
History
McIntosh County was created in 1907 from part of the Creek Nation, Indian Territory. The county was named for Chief William McIntosh, a leader of the Creek Nation who was killed in 1825 for signing the Treaty of Indian Springs, which ceded Creek lands to the United States.
The county was originally home to the Creek Nation, and the area was known as the Creek Nation District. The area was opened to white settlement in 1901, and the town of Eufaula was established in 1902. The town was named for the nearby Eufaula Lake, which was named for the Creek town of Eufaula, Alabama.
The county was officially organized in 1907, and the first county seat was located in the town of Rentiesville. The county seat was moved to Eufaula in 1909.
