Blanchard Summary
Blanchard is a city located in McClain County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 4,845 at the 2010 census, an increase of 28.3 percent from 3,765 at the 2000 census. Blanchard is part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Blanchard was founded in 1891 by the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad. The town was named for the railroad's president, William Blanchard. The post office was established in 1892.
Geography
Blanchard is located at 35°7′45″N 97°37′17″W (35.129259, -97.621390). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Blanchard is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural operations, including a large hog farm and a large dairy farm. The city also has several manufacturing plants, including a large paper mill and a large plastics plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,765 people, 1,521 households, and 1,093 families residing in the city. The population density was 725.3 people per square mile (280.3/km2). There were 1,637 housing units at an average density of 314.7 per square mile (121.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 0.3% African American, 2.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $41,944. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,917 for females.
