Anadarko Summary
Anadarko is a city located in Caddo County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 6,762 at the 2010 census, a decline of 8.1 percent from 7,437 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Caddo County.
History
Anadarko was founded in 1873 by the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache tribes. The city was named after the Anadarko tribe, which had been relocated to the area from Texas. The city was incorporated in 1901.
Anadarko was the site of the first oil well in Oklahoma, drilled in 1892. The city was a major oil producer until the 1950s.

Anadarko is located at 35°3′25″N 98°3′48″W (35.056944, -98.063333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Anadarko's economy is largely based on oil and gas production, agriculture, and tourism. The city is home to several oil and gas companies, including Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, which is the largest employer in the city.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7,437 people, 2,845 households, and 1,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,764.2 people per square mile (683.2/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 730.2 per square mile (282.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 62.45% White, 3.90% African American, 24.45% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 5.45% from other races, and 3.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.45% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,944. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,972 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,945.
