About Iowa Counties
Iowa is a state located in the Midwestern United States. It is bordered by the Mississippi River to the east, the Missouri River and the Big Sioux River to the west, and the Minnesota border to the north. Iowa is divided into 99 counties, each of which is governed by a board of supervisors. The counties are further divided into 941 townships and 16 cities.
Iowa's counties are diverse in terms of population, geography, and economic activity. The most populous county is Polk County, which is home to the state capital of Des Moines. Other populous counties include Linn County, Scott County, Johnson County, and Black Hawk County. The least populous county is Adams County, with a population of just 3,000.
The geography of Iowa's counties varies greatly. The northern part of the state is dominated by rolling hills and prairies, while the southern part is more hilly and wooded. The eastern part of the state is mostly flat, while the western part is more rugged and mountainous.
The economy of Iowa's counties is largely based on agriculture. The state is a major producer of corn, soybeans, and hogs. Other important agricultural products include oats, hay, and dairy products. Manufacturing is also an important part of the economy, with major employers including John Deere, Rockwell Collins, and Hormel Foods.
The counties of Iowa are also home to a variety of attractions. The Amana Colonies are a group of seven villages located in Iowa County that were founded by German immigrants in the mid-1800s. The Effigy Mounds National Monument is located in Allamakee County and is home to a variety of Native American burial mounds. The Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend is a series of nine grottos that were built by a local priest in the early 1900s.
Iowa's counties are a diverse and vibrant part of the state. Each county has its own unique history, geography, and economy, and all of them contribute to the overall character of the state. From the rolling hills of the north to the rugged mountains of the west, Iowa's counties offer something for everyone.
