Ridgeland Summary

Ridgeland is a town located in Jasper County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,385 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jasper County.

History

Ridgeland was founded in 1872 as a railroad town. It was named for the nearby ridge of land that runs through the area. The town was incorporated in 1891.
Ridgeland was the site of a major battle during the American Civil War. On July 2, 1863, Confederate forces under General P.G.T. Beauregard attacked Union forces under General Quincy A. Gillmore at the Battle of Honey Hill. The battle was a Confederate victory, but the Union forces were able to hold their ground and prevent the Confederates from advancing further.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,072 people, 817 households, and 545 families residing in the town. The population density was 492.3 people per square mile (190.2/km2). There were 890 housing units at an average density of 211.7 per square mile (81.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 57.45% White, 40.45% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 817 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
