Harleyville Summary

Harleyville is a small town located in Dorchester County, South Carolina. It is situated about 25 miles northwest of Charleston and is part of the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

Geography

Harleyville is located at 33°14'25"N 80°25'17"W (33.240278, -80.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

Harleyville was founded in 1820 by William Harley, a planter from nearby Summerville. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1891. The town was originally a farming community, but in the early 20th century, it became a center for the production of turpentine and naval stores. The town also had a cotton mill and a sawmill.
