Goose Creek is a city located in Berkeley County, South Carolina, United States. It is part of the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 35,938 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Goose Creek is located in Berkeley County, South Carolina, at 33°1′N 80°7′W (33.0167, -80.1167). It is situated along the Cooper River, approximately 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Charleston. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.7 km2), of which 23.9 square miles (61.9 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) (1.17%) is water.
History
Goose Creek was founded in the early 1700s by settlers from England and France. The town was named after the nearby Goose Creek, which was named for the large number of geese that inhabited the area. The town was originally a trading post for the local Native American tribes, and later became a major port for the export of rice and indigo.
In the late 1800s, Goose Creek was a popular summer resort for wealthy Charlestonians. The town was also home to a number of large plantations, including the historic Middleton Place.
Economy
Goose Creek is home to a number of businesses and industries, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to the Naval Weapons Station Charleston, which is the largest employer in the area.
The city is also home to a number of shopping centers, including the Goose Creek Towne Center, which is anchored by a Walmart Supercenter.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 35,938 people, 11,945 households, and 8,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,491.3 people per square mile (575.2/km2). There were 12,845 housing units at an average density of 535.3 per square mile (206.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 24.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.7% of the population.
There were 11,945 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
