Fairfax Summary

Fairfax, South Carolina is a small town located in Allendale County, South Carolina. It is situated on the Savannah River, near the border of Georgia and South Carolina. The town was founded in 1872 and is the county seat of Allendale County. The population of Fairfax was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Fairfax is located at 33°14'25"N 81°45'45"W (33.240278, -81.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

Fairfax was founded in 1872 and named after the town of Fairfax, Virginia. The town was originally a trading post for the local Native American tribes. In 1876, the town was incorporated and the first post office was established.
The town was a major stop on the Savannah and Augusta Railroad, which connected the two cities. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town. In the late 19th century, Fairfax was a major center for cotton production and processing.

Economy

The economy of Fairfax is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a large poultry farm. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,527.2 people per square mile (589.3/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 676.7 per square mile (261.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 57.2% White, 40.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races.
