Zearing is a small town located in Story County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ames, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Zearing was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the Zearing family, who were early settlers in the area. The first post office was established in 1882.
Geography
Zearing is located at 42°14'17" North, 93°20'17" West (42.238, -93.338). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Zearing is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a few restaurants and a grocery store.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 370.0 per square mile (142.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
