History
The area that is now Windsor Heights was first settled in the late 1800s. The city was incorporated in 1953. The city was named after Windsor Castle in England.

Windsor Heights is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, Hy-Vee, and several restaurants. The city is also home to the Des Moines International Airport.

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,860 people, 2,072 households, and 1,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,841.2 people per square mile (1,097.2/km2). There were 2,207 housing units at an average density of 1,294.7 per square mile (499.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 2,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
