Wilton Summary

Wilton is a city located in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muscatine Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Wilton was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from Wilton, Connecticut. The town was named after the settlers' hometown. The first post office was established in 1856. The town was incorporated in 1872.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Wilton is home to several businesses, including a manufacturing plant, a grocery store, a bank, and a variety of other small businesses. The city is also home to a number of churches, a library, and a museum.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,288.6 people per square mile (496.7/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 527.3 per square mile (203.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.04.
