Wheatland was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after the abundance of wheat that grew in the area. The first post office was established in 1837 and the first school was built in 1845. The town was incorporated in 1856.
Wheatland was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in Canada. The town was also a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, which ran through the town from 1854 to 1971.

The town is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 20 miles south of the state capital of Des Moines. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the area.
