Waukon is a city located in Allamakee County, Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Allamakee County and is located along the Upper Iowa River. The population was 3,717 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Waukon was first settled in 1849 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was originally named Waukon Junction, after the nearby Waukon Creek. The name was changed to Waukon in 1856. The town was incorporated in 1872.
The city was a major stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, which ran through the city from 1881 to 1980. The railroad was a major employer in the city and helped to spur economic growth.

Geography

Waukon is located at 42°27′N 91°27′W (42.45, -91.45). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.17 square miles (8.19 km2), all of it land.
The city is located along the Upper Iowa River, which flows through the city. The river is a popular destination for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.

The economy of Waukon is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural businesses, including a feed mill, a grain elevator, and a dairy.

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,717 people, 1,541 households, and 990 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,179.2 people per square mile (455.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races.
