Union Summary

Union is a city located in Jones County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Union was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from Union County, Ohio. The town was named after the county in Ohio. The first post office was established in 1856. The town was incorporated in 1876.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Union is a small rural community with a strong agricultural base. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a few restaurants. The town also has a small industrial park.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 672.5 per square mile (259.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
