History
Swisher was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after a local farmer, John Swisher, who donated the land for the town. The first post office was established in 1872.
In 1875 the first school was built in Swisher The town was incorporated in 1876
In the early 1900s, Swisher was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a general store, a blacksmith shop, a creamery, a bank, and a hotel.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
