Sutherland Summary

Sutherland is a small city located in O'Brien County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Little Sioux River, approximately 10 miles south of the county seat of Primghar. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

Sutherland was founded in 1882 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after William Sutherland, a railroad official. The first post office was established in 1883.

Geography

Sutherland is located at 43°14'17" North, 95°25'17" West (43.238, -95.421). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Sutherland's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the area.
