Stuart Summary
Stuart is a small city located in Adair County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Middle Raccoon River, approximately 20 miles (32 km) east of the county seat of Greenfield. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Stuart was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the railroad's president, Stuart Drake. The first post office was established in 1882.
Stuart was incorporated as a city in 1887. The city was a major shipping point for livestock and grain. In the early 1900s, the city was home to several businesses, including a creamery, a flour mill, a lumber yard, a bank, and a hotel.
Geography
Stuart is located at 41°25'25" North, 94°37'45" West (41.423, -94.629). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Stuart's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the area.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile (351.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 391.7 per square mile (151.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females.
