St Charles Summary

St. Charles is a small city located in the state of Iowa, United States. It is located in the southeastern part of the state, in the county of Fayette. The city has a population of 1,845 people, according to the 2010 census.

History

St. Charles was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Oelwein. The settlers were looking for a place to build a new town and chose the area around St. Charles Creek. The town was named after the creek, which was named after Charles, the patron saint of France.
The town grew quickly and by 1856, it had a population of over 500 people. The town was incorporated in 1858 and the first mayor was elected in 1859.
In the late 19th century, St. Charles was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain mills, a sawmill, a flour mill, and a brickyard. The town also had a number of stores, a hotel, and a post office.
In the early 20th century, St. Charles began to decline. The town’s population decreased and many of the businesses closed. The town was hit hard by the Great Depression and many of the residents left in search of work.
