Sloan Summary
Sloan is a small city located in Woodbury County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sioux City, IA–NE–SD Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Sloan was founded in 1887 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the railroad's president, William Sloan. The first post office in Sloan was established in 1888.

Economy
The economy of Sloan is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the city.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.7/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 674.2 per square mile (260.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
