Rome Summary

Rome, Iowa is a small city located in Floyd County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Cedar River, and is part of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Rome was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Rome was founded in 1851 by a group of settlers from Rome, New York. The town was named after the city in Italy, and was originally known as Rome Station. The town was incorporated in 1872.
Rome was a major stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, and was a major hub for the area's agricultural industry. The town was also home to a number of manufacturing businesses, including a flour mill, a brickyard, and a furniture factory.

Geography

Rome is located at 42°7′17″N 92°17′17″W (42.1214, -92.2881). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Rome's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to a number of agricultural businesses, including a feed mill, a grain elevator, and a dairy. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing businesses, including a furniture factory, a brickyard, and a flour mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.7/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 674.2 per square mile (260.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females.
