Richland Summary

Richland, Iowa is a small town located in the southeastern corner of the state, in Keokuk County. It is situated on the banks of the Des Moines River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The town has a population of just over 500 people, and is known for its small-town charm and friendly atmosphere.

History

Richland was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the nearby Richland Creek, which was named for its abundance of rich soil. The town quickly grew, and by the late 1800s, it had become a thriving agricultural center. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the early 1900s, Richland began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. However, the town was able to remain afloat due to its strong agricultural base. In the 1950s, the town experienced a resurgence in population as many people moved back to the area to take advantage of the town’s low cost of living and its proximity to larger cities.

Richland is located in the southeastern corner of Iowa, in Keokuk County. It is situated on the banks of the Des Moines River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The town is located approximately 30 miles from the state capital of Des Moines, and is within easy driving distance of several larger cities, including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Davenport.

As of the 2010 census, Richland had a population of 514 people. The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.6% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races.
