Red Oak Summary

Red Oak, Iowa is a small city located in Montgomery County in the southwestern part of the state. It is situated along the East Nishnabotna River, approximately 50 miles east of Omaha, Nebraska. History

Red Oak was founded in 1853 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was named after the red oak trees that grew in the area. The first post office was established in 1854 and the city was incorporated in 1868.
In the late 19th century, Red Oak was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The railroad brought many new settlers to the area and helped to spur the city’s growth.

Geography

Red Oak is located at 41°2′N 95°17′W (41.03, -95.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Red Oak’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large employers, including the Red Oak Manufacturing Company, which produces agricultural equipment, and the Red Oak Foods Company, which produces canned and frozen foods.
The city also has a thriving retail sector, with several stores and restaurants located in the downtown area.

As of the 2010 census, there were 5,741 people, 2,310 households, and 1,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,368.2 people per square mile (529.2/km2). There were 2,521 housing units at an average density of 602.2 per square mile (232.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 2,310 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $22,917 for females.
