Randolph Summary

Randolph, Iowa is a small city located in the western part of the state, in the county of Madison. It is situated on the banks of the North River, and is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census, and is the county seat of Madison County.

History

Randolph was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Ohio, led by William Randolph. The town was named after him, and was incorporated in 1868. The first post office was established in 1857, and the first school was built in 1859.
The city was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, and was a major shipping point for grain and livestock. The railroad also brought many new settlers to the area, and the population grew rapidly.
In the late 19th century, Randolph was a major center for the production of brick and tile. The city was also home to several manufacturing plants, including a flour mill, a creamery, and a furniture factory.

Geography

Randolph is located at 41°25'45"N 94°17'45"W (41.4292, -94.2958). It is situated on the banks of the North River, and is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km2), all of it land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the surrounding area.

Economy

Randolph's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large farms, and is a major producer of corn, soybeans, and hogs.
Manufacturing is also an important part of the local economy. The city is home to several factories, including a furniture factory, a flour mill, and a creamery.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,527.3 people per square mile (589.3/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 676.3 per square mile (261.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
