Rake Summary

Rake is a small city located in Hancock County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mason City Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Rake was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Norway. The town was named after the Norwegian word for “rake”, which was used to describe the area’s rolling hills. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Rake was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a general store, a blacksmith shop, a creamery, a lumberyard, and a hotel. The town also had a school, a church, and a bank.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as many of its residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. The population of Rake dropped from a peak of 845 in 1950 to 545 in 2010.

Geography

Rake is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 169 and Iowa Highway 17 in Hancock County. The city is situated on the western edge of the Des Moines Lobe, a region of rolling hills and prairies. The city is located approximately 10 miles south of Mason City and 25 miles north of Fort Dodge.
The city has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land. The city is located in the Central Time Zone.

Economy

Rake’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The city also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 776.4 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 5.3% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
