Pleasant Hill is a city located in Polk County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,785 at the 2010 census.
History
Pleasant Hill was founded in 1854 by settlers from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. The city was originally known as Pleasant Hill Station, as it was a stop on the Des Moines Valley Railroad. The city was incorporated in 1876.
Geography
Pleasant Hill is located at 41°35′17″N 93°41′45″W (41.587950, -93.695890). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.45 square miles (21.86 km2), of which 8.43 square miles (21.81 km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2) is water.
Economy
Pleasant Hill is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Hy-Vee grocery store, and a variety of restaurants. The city is also home to several industrial parks, including the Pleasant Hill Industrial Park, which is home to several manufacturing and distribution companies.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 8,785 people, 3,541 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,039.2 people per square mile (400.7/km2). There were 3,741 housing units at an average density of 443.3 per square mile (171.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 3.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
