Palo Summary

Palo, Iowa is a small city located in Linn County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the Cedar River, approximately 10 miles north of Cedar Rapids. The population was 1,945 at the 2010 census.

History

Palo was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the nearby Palo Creek, which was named after the Native American word for “clear water”. The first post office was established in 1856.
In the late 19th century, Palo was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, and a sawmill. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and several churches.
In the early 20th century, the town began to decline as the railroad bypassed it. The population decreased from a peak of 1,500 in 1910 to just over 1,000 in 1950.

Geography

Palo is located at 41°59'17" North, 91°37'45" West (41.9879, -91.6292). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Palo’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The town also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
