Orient Summary

Orient is a small city located in Adair County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Orient was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the Orient Mine, which was located nearby. The mine was named after the Orient Express, a famous train that ran from Paris to Istanbul.

The first post office in Orient was established in 1881 The town was incorporated in 1882

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Orient is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators and a feed mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 365.2 per square mile (141.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.90% White, 0.18% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.18% Asian, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.18% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
