History

The area that is now Newton was first settled in 1846 by settlers from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. The town was originally named “New Town” after the settlers’ hometowns. In 1847, the name was changed to Newton in honor of Thomas Newton, Jr., a prominent local businessman.
In 1854, the Chicago and North Western Railway was built through Newton, connecting it to the rest of the state. This allowed for the growth of the town, and by 1858, Newton had become the county seat of Jasper County.
In the late 19th century, Newton was a major center for the production of agricultural equipment. The town was home to several factories, including the Maytag Company, which was founded in 1893. The company was a major employer in the area and produced a variety of products, including washing machines, refrigerators, and other appliances.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
