Newhall Summary
Newhall is a small city located in Benton County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Cedar River, approximately 20 miles north of Cedar Rapids. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Newhall was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after Newhall, New York, the hometown of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1856.
In 1868, the Cedar Rapids and Missouri River Railroad was built through Newhall, connecting the town to Cedar Rapids and other nearby towns. This allowed for the growth of the town, and by 1880, the population had grown to over 500.
In the early 1900s, Newhall was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, and a lumber yard. The town also had a variety of stores, including a hardware store, a drug store, and a grocery store.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as many of the businesses closed or moved away. The population dropped to just over 1,000 by the 1970s.

Newhall is located at 42°7′17″N 91°45′17″W (42.1214, -91.7547). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Newhall’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a variety of small businesses, including a hardware store, a grocery store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 674.2 per square mile (260.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,000 for females.
