Montezuma was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Aztec emperor Montezuma II. The first post office was established in 1855. The town was incorporated in 1876.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in Montezuma. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
