History

The town of Melvin was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from the Netherlands. The settlers were looking for a place to settle and farm, and the area around Melvin was ideal for this purpose. The town was named after the first settler, John Melvin, who was a Dutch immigrant.
The town grew slowly over the years, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to a variety of businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith, a hotel, and a bank.
In the 1920s, the town began to experience a decline in population as many of the younger residents moved away to larger cities in search of better job opportunities. This trend continued until the 1950s, when the population began to slowly increase again.

Melvin is located in the northwest corner of Iowa, in O’Brien County. It is situated on the banks of the Little Sioux River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The town is located about 25 miles from the Minnesota border, and about 50 miles from the South Dakota border.
