Marquette Summary

Marquette, Iowa is a small town located in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, just south of the Iowa-Minnesota border.

History

Marquette was founded in 1854 by a group of German immigrants who had come to the area to work in the lead mines. The town was named after Father Jacques Marquette, a French Jesuit missionary who explored the area in the late 1600s. The town was incorporated in 1858 and soon became a thriving river port.
